The Vampire Diaries is based on a novel series penned by L.J. Smith where you are given the insight into the diary of Elena Gilbert. Elena had always been a star student; beautiful, popular and involved with school and friends. As the fall semester begins, Elena becomes fascinated with the mysterious new boy in school, Stefan Salvatore, and she has no way of knowing he is a centuries-old vampire. While Stefan struggles to live peacefully among humans, his brother Damon is the embodiment of violence and brutality. Episode 1: Pilot (Sep/10/2009)
Elena Gilbert and her brother Jeremy come to terms with the death of their parents. Elena is popular amongst her peers and the perfect straight A student, but has difficulties hiding her grief from the world. Meanwhile, Jeremy treads on a dangerous path of using drugs to ease his pain. The arrival of new student Stefan Salvatore, however, makes Elena think about romantic possibilities.

Episode 2: The Night of the Comet (Sep/17/2009)
Mystic Falls begins the preparations to celebrate the passing of a comet. Vicki recuperates in the hospital from her injuries. Stefan uses his abilities to erase Vicki's attacker from her memory, but is interrupted by Matt. Mr. Tanner warns Aunt Jenna about Jeremy. Elena and Damon meet for the first time at the Salvatore house and his revelation on Stefan's past brings Elena closer to the truth. Damon finds his next victim in Caroline.

Episode 9: History Repeating (Nov/12/2009)
Stefan learns the reason Damon returned to Mystic Falls - Jeremy gets a break from the mysterious new history teacher, Alaric Saltzman and introduces Alaric to Jenna. Bonnie is having terrifying dreams about one of her ancestors. Despite Elena's efforts to smooth things over, Bonnie and Caroline continue to argue over the medallion. When the girls hold a séance to help them decide what to do, the results are stranger than any of them expected. Matt comes to Caroline's aid when she needs a friend. Damon finally reveals to Stefan the stunning reason he has returned to Mystic Falls.

Episode 10: The Turning Point (Nov/19/2009)
Stefan and Damon find a common enemy and someone they deem to be a threat. Meanwhile, Elena confesses her love for Stefan and persuades him to stay in Mystic Falls, but she also makes a devastating discovery that adversely affects her relationship with him. Jeremy takes up drawing fantasy creatures again.

Damon, Elena and Stefan attend the school dance with a 1950s' theme, where Alaric introduces himself to Damon. Stefan and Damon try to figure out the identity of the new vampire in town, and Stefan gives Elena jewelry filled with vervain to protect her family and friends. To make ends meet, Matt takes a job at the Mystic Grill. Ben comes to help Bonnie when he notices Damon is bothering her.

Episode 13: Children of the Damned (Feb/04/2010)
In flashbacks, Stefan and Damon recall the long-ago actions taken by townspeople including their father, Guiseppe Salvatore, and Pearl, leading to the devastating events that caused the rift in their relationship. In the present, Bonnie's date with Ben takes a frightening turn. Elena helps Stefan as he and Damon race to find the missing journal that belonged to Elena's ancestor. Episode 1: The Return (Sep/09/2010)
Elena returns home and is horrified to learn what has happened to Jeremy and Uncle John. Bonnie, Matt, and Damon wait at the hospital with Sheriff Forbes, who is anxious to hear whether Caroline will survive the car accident. Elena and Damon share a confusing conversation about the evening's events, and Damon realizes that Katherine has returned. He and Stefan set out to learn why Katherine came back and whether she poses a threat to Mystic Falls. Tyler's uncle, Mason, arrives to console his family members, who are still grieving after the mayor's death.

Episode 2: Brave New World (Sep/16/2010)
Caroline, feeling confused and desperate, joins her friends at the Mystic Falls Carnival after being released from the hospital. Damon wants to take immediate action, but Stefan and Elena offer Caroline their support. Matt tries to tell Caroline how he feels about her despite being confused about her behavior. Damon starts to suspect Mason Lockwood and tries to use Tyler's short temper to get Mason to reveal his secret. With a full moon approaching, Caroline helps Tyler prepare for his inevitable transformation. Klaus contacts Chicago witch Gloria to help him find the reasons why his plan isn't working as he expected. Gloria, though able to see glimpses of the puzzle, needs Stefan's help to piece it all together. Damon is pushed to his limits by a new enemy in Mystic Falls with far reaching effects. Even while helping Elena confront her feelings, Caroline tries to cope with her own emotions. Jeremy is left extremely confused after a dramatic and important discovery with one of his ghosts. But it's an unexpected meeting involving Bonnie that will touch everyone's lives.

Episode 5: The Reckoning (Oct/13/2011)
Elena, Bonnie, Matt and Tyler decide to oblige Caroline when she urges them to celebrate Senior Prank Night, but uninvited guests make for a deadly evening. Damon convinces Jeremy that his connection to the other side may be the way to defeat Klaus. Klaus uses Stefan for more dangerous and brutal intentions.

Bonnie believes her dreams she's been having about Klaus's coffins will help her figure out how he can be killed. The recurring dreams also lead Bonnie to a reunion with her mother, Abby, whom Bonnie hasn't seen for 15 years. When they visit Abby's farmhouse, Bonnie and Elena meet Jamie, a young man Abby took in years earlier. Though Bonnie's sudden appearance catches Abby off-guard, she does her best to explain the past. Tyler turns to an unexpected ally as he works to regain his free will. Damon is intrigued by Dr. Fell, and Klaus and Stefan continue their violent negotiations over control of the coffins containing Klaus's family members.

Sheriff Forbes delivers some unsettling news to Alaric and Elena about the murder weapon used in a recent killing. Stefan decides to intervene with Damon when his behavior escalates, Elena asks to tag along but has her own reasoning as to why. Dr. Wes tests Damon's friendship with Enzo by asking for help from the Travelers. Matt has a heart to heart with Nadia and gets help to protect Elena, however this ends up in a violent argument. After the argument Stefan tries comforting Caroline, when the pair make a horrifying discovery.

Episode 15: Gone Girl (Mar/06/2014)
Nadia continues searching for her mother, something that she has now been doing for centuries. Elena's life is still in danger, so Stefan, Caroline and Matt have to come up with a new plan. Bonnie and Jeremy look to Liv to help them out. Damon confronts Tyler, leaving him seeking vengeance and wanting to his out at Dr. Wes. Caroline and Tyler come to an understanding. Bonnie discovers something that puts everyone's lives in danger.

Episode 16: While You Were Sleeping (Mar/20/2014)
When Stefan tries to explain recent events to a very sick Elena, her first instinct is to call Damon. At the same time, Damon is trying to figure out how to make a disturbing confession to Elena. While going through Dr. Wes' files, Caroline discovers a frightening secret, and is surprised when Enzo appears, claiming to have the solution everyone is searching for. At Enzo's insistence, Caroline asks Stefan to meet her at a mysterious location where they are joined by a group of Travelers, including Sloan, who reveals new information on the importance of doppelgangers. During spring break on a mostly deserted Whitmore campus, Elena runs into Luke, a student who seems to know her, though she has no memory of meeting him. Recently dumped by his boyfriend, Luke proposes that he and Elena spend the break getting drunk together, but she sends him off on an urgent mission to find Bonnie and the "newbie" witch, Liv. Damon finally tells Elena the truth about his recent activities, and they come to a new agreement about their relationship.

Episode 17: Rescue Me (Mar/27/2014)
In order to keep Stefan from being harmed by Sloan and the Travelers, Caroline and Enzo agree to make a trip to Atlanta to find a newly discovered doppleganger. Caroline is surprised when Enzo opens up to her about his past. Damon and Elena spend an awkward afternoon at Jeremy's parent-teacher conference, where they hear bad news about his behavior at school. Afterwards, Damon reluctantly tells Elena upsetting news about Jeremy's personal life. Bonnie has an unsettling encounter with Luke, and learns more about his family history. Liv fills Jeremy in on the rumors about the Travelers' next move and demonstrates her considerable power. Jeremy makes an unexpected deal with Liv, then makes a decision that is devastating to Elena. Stefan and Caroline share a special moment of friendship. Finally, a terrifying turn of events at the Travelers' camp leads to the appearance of their mysterious leader, Markos.

Episode 18: Resident Evil (Apr/17/2014)
Both Stefan and Elena are suddenly having unsettling dreams of an alternate version of the life they might have had together. Bonnie has a disturbing encounter with Grams, who warns her about frightening changes on the Other Side. Enzo gives Damon unwanted relationship advice, then admits he is searching for a woman he loved decades before while he was held captive by the Augustines. Liv enlists Matt, Jeremy and Tyler to help track the Travelers and keep them from taking control of Mystic Falls. Bonnie is hurt and angry when she learns that Jeremy is working with Liv behind her back. Luke shows up at the Salvatore house and explains what he knows about Markos and the Travelers to Damon, Elena and Enzo. Matt has a terrifying encounter with inhabitants of the Other Side. Finally, when Damon finds Markos, he is both relieved and disturbed by what Markos has to tell him.

Episode 19: Man On Fire (Apr/24/2014)
Stefan tries to distract Elena from obsessing about the state of her relationship with Damon, while Bonnie does her best to be realistic about how the changes happening on the Other Side will affect her existence as the Anchor. Damon demands the Traveler knife, forcing Jeremy and Matt to admit it has gone missing. Through flashbacks to election night, 1960, Enzo reveals to Elena, Stefan and Bonnie that he has learned what happened to his long-lost love, Maggie, and then, with the unwilling help of Liv and Luke, things take an ugly turn. Trying to calm Enzo down, Damon intervenes, but his words cause Enzo to make a desperate and dangerous decision that leads to a violent confrontation with Stefan. Finally, Markos enlists Sloan's help in a ritual designed to break an ancient curse against the Travelers. Tyler is forced to play a dangerous part in the ritual, while witnessing the incredible power the Travelers now possess.

Episode 20: What Lies Beneath (May/01/2014)
Damon takes Stefan and Elena to safety, by keeping them in a cabin. He decides to try and drag their secret out of them, so uses a parlor game to do so. Jeremy is kept in the dark about the other side by Bonnie.

Episode 21: Promised Land/color] (May/08/2014)
When Stefan and Elena escape from Markos' control, only to find themselves stranded in a remote location, Stefan gets philosophical with Elena about her relationship with Damon. After their attempt to protect the dopplegangers goes badly, Liv and Luke come up with a dangerous new strategy. Damon recruits Matt and Jeremy to help him set a trap for Markos, who turns out to have a devastating surprise of his own. Bonnie finally admits to Caroline that she's been keeping the truth about the Other Side from everyone. Finally, while Bonnie searches desperately for a way to stop Markos, Caroline is witness to an unthinkable act of violence by one of the Travelers.

Episode 22: Home (May/18/2014)
Heartbroken by an unexpected tragedy, Damon is focused on holding himself together, while pushing Bonnie harder than ever to find a way to stop the disintegration of the Other Side. Elena takes matters into her own hands and demands that Liv and Luke help her, but Liv refuses to cooperate until Caroline provides her with some personal motivation. Sheriff Forbes is horrified when Markos uses violence against Tyler/Julian to prove that Mystic Falls is now under the control of the Travelers. With new information from Sheriff Forbes, Damon comes up with a dangerous plan that relies on split-second timing from Jeremy and Matt. Liv's off-hand remark regarding Stefan gets a surprisingly emotional response from Caroline. As conditions on the Other Side worsen, Bonnie takes the opportunity to settle an old score. Finally, Damon's plan causes a massive explosion in Mystic Falls, and everyone is caught up in the confusion, leaving a trail of heroism, sacrifice, relief and despair.

Damon has to look back at one of the worst day's of his life. Alaric wants to help Jeremy get his life back in order. Stefan shows Elena how to start over with a new identity.

Elena invites Liam to attend a party with her at the corn maze. Caroline however is preoccupied when Stefan unexpectedly shows up and needs her help. Tyler finds himself in a dangerous situation. Stefan comes clean to Caroline.

Alaric is wanting to find out more about Jo, he asks Elena to look into her background. Sarah makes a shocking discovery when she breaks into Tripp's office.
