Romola Garai, Chris O'Dowd, Gillian Anderson, Richard E Grant, Shirley Henderson, Amanda Hale and Mark Gatiss star in a bold four-part adaptation of The Crimson Petal And The White adapted from Michel Faber's best selling novel by acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Lucinda Coxon and directed by award-winning Marc Munden (The Devil's Whore, The Mark Of Cain), produced by Origin Pictures for the BBC.

A tale of love, lust, desire and revenge, it reveals the true sexual politics of Victorian life. In the words of the heroine, Sugar: "If you dare enter this world, you had better tread carefully."

Season 1



Episode 1:
William Rackham life is falling apart as he is failing as a writer, deeply in debt and unwilling to join his father in business. He also has problems with his troubled wife, Agnes, who draws the family into disrepute by her odd behaviour. William ends up finding comfort with prostitute Sugar, who works at the brothel run by Mrs Castaway.

Episode 2:
Sugar decides to develop her hold over William and finds out his address so that she spy on his house. Agnes is convinced that the Sugar is an angel sent to watch over her after catching a glimpse of her. William ends up moving Sugar out of the brothel and to into her own house. Sugar starts her own ascent into polite society with the money that William gives her.

Episode 3:
The family business is going from strength to strength thanks to William. His hectic schedule though means that he becomes way too busy to keep going back and forth to Sugar's house. He ends up deciding to ask Sugar to become governess to his neglected daughter, Sophie. Sugar ends up getting her hands on Agnes' diaries, which provide an insight into her mind. Dr Curlew thinks that Agnes should be permanently sedated and wants to have her committed into an asylum. Sugar ends up smuggling her out of the house and provides her with money and gives her instructions which will help her.

Episode 4:
As Sugar's bond with Sophie continues to grow she begins to worry that she is pregnant. Sugar's hope that she will become a more permanent fixture in William's life is short-lived after he becomes distant and looks instead to a marriage with Lady Bridgelow. Sugar ends up loosing the baby she is expecting. William ends up sacking her from her position and hires a new governess to look after Sophie. A furious Sugar has to decide what to do next.
